Wrightsville Beach NC Nearshore and Offshore Fishing Report.
Captain Jesse: Writes weekly fishing reports for Fisherman’s Post and Fishing Booker
: The King Mackerel bit has slowed down a little bit. With water temps in the low 60’s in the 25 mile range so the kings have moved to deeper warmer water. There the water temps are in the high 60’s 30 miles offshore/ Plus there are temp breaks in these areas. Fish areas like School House, 23 Mile Rock, or areas with good bottom structure that will hold the bait. Must productive lures have been Drone Spoons fished on #2 planers with 40ft leaders. You will catch False Albacore while fishing for kings in these areas. But they can be used for strip bait.
: We have finally had some good weather the last week or so to make the run to the stream. There have been some great temp breaks in the 20-40 fathom range or 120ft-240ft. Same ol’ hole, Nipple have been productive for Wahoo, Blackfin and Sailfish. 130ft – 160ft has been on fire for Sailfish, Tuna and Wahoo. That is were you can find Blackfin tuna and Wahoo in good numbers when the conditions are right. The most important thing is the bottom structure, look for ledges and drop offs. The tides have also affected the bit. Either side of high tide and low tide is when the bit is the best. Blackfin we have been using pink UV squid teasers set about 200-300 ft back from the boat on the outside out rigger and shotgun rods. The key to catching tuna is to keep the lures out of the prop wash and keep them in the choppy water away from the boat. Wahoo can be caught in the same areas. Using planner rods close to the boat below the prop wash has put fish in the boat. Small blue/white Ilanders rigged with small ballyhoo. Fathom skirt rigs with sliver heads and white/pink/black skirts have been working great on flat lines ran above the planners on the surface.
Winter Fishing Forecast
: Gulfstream Wahoo and tuna bite should be very good this winter. We have seen good signs of bait and excellent water quality. Wintertime Wahoo fishing in the Gulf Stream is some of the best fishing you could ever do. There are plenty of Wahoo to catch between December and April. The blackfin tuna bite is normally very good as well. We should have an exciting season this winter while fishing in the Gulf Stream.
Blue Fin Tuna Report
: The bite should be good this winter this year. These massive giants of the ocean pass through our waters during the months of November thru March. The colder the weather we could easily find these fish parked off of the Frying Pan Shoals or feeding on our menhaden close to the beach. But water temps, air temps and bait have everything to do with the BFT bite. Menhaden is the bait of choice for BFT. Find the bait you will find the fish. BFT will be in the 3-20 mile offshore if they show up to feed on the local menhaden schools on there way to the Gulf of Mexico. January is also a great time to catch black sea bass one of the tastiest fish they can be found in the 5-20 mile range. The gulf stream is alive with Wahoo in the Fall/winter. Inshore/Nearshore the trout fishing should remain steady and continue to offer some angling fun. Where excited for our upcoming winter season giving us a call set up a trip of a lifetime Nearshore or Gulfstream.
